Abstract
Traditional machining processes such as shaping, turning, planning, drilling, milling, etc. have limitations in generating highly complex products or features in the machining of hard-to-cut materials. Advanced (or non-conventional/modern/new/unconventional) machining methods such as electrochemical machining, electric discharge machining, ultrasonic machining, micromachining, etc. provide alternatives for generating highly complex three-dimensional products or features. However, every method has various sustainability issues, which need to be addressed to reduce their detrimental environmental impact, and to improve accuracy and productivity. In this chapter, a systematic review of recently published work related to sustainability issues in advanced machining processes is reported. This work addresses the process mechanism, sensors and controls, surface integrity, and various sustainability-related issues at nano/micro and macro scales.
