Abstract

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in different fields, including ophthalmology. Recent studies have demonstrated that AI‐based techniques have started to approach near‐human levels of performance, and has led to much interest and excitement. Yet, excitement about AI has also been accompanied by sometimes unrealistic expectations. This talk will provide an overview on the basics of AI, including a brief history on its development and the different types of AI, including machine‐learning and deep‐learning. Fundamental principles of deep‐learning will be introduced, and key differences between traditional image processing techniques and deep‐learning will also be discussed, together with limitations and potential pitfalls of the technology. The talk will also provide a glimpse into recent and emerging trends in this rapidly evolving field.
