A review of Jody Berland’s new book, Virtual Menageries: Animals as Mediators in Network Cultures (2019). Rather than simply serving as content for media, Berland argues that animals perform the work of mediation itself. Still situated within colonial formations, Berland posits animal bodies, energies, and affects continue to be used to facilitate connections at fledgling frontiers.
