The role of historic building information modeling in the cultural resistance of liberated city

Abstract

The cultural heritage and physical structures are considered to carry symbolic meanings inherent in civilization; they are the main components in formulating the identity and memory of populations, the bridge of communication between generations, and one of the development substrates in building cities in general, and liberated cities in particular. Preserving this heritage is achieved first by modeling it as one of the essential priorities in reconstructing these cities, thus strengthening their cultural resistance. The concept of Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) has emerged—a precise, integrated, and multidisciplinary technique for the modeling of architectural heritage in an accurate and sustainable manner and then disseminating it, especially regarding archaeological buildings that have been completely destroyed as a result of natural or military operations. This research aims to prepare an action plan, using several programs to achieve its goal. The HBIM model of Khan Hamu Quddo (1300 AH − 1882 CE) in the city of Mosul, which was destroyed due to military operations to liberate the city (2017), was represented through the Autodesk Revit 2021 program and developed with the Lumion program. The research revealed the role of HBIM in preserving the heritage from extinction, as a collective external memory of the bright, vigilant, fortified nation, preventing it from being forgotten and providing a strong link that connects the nation's present with its past, to build its future.
