Abstract

The wide area measurements system WAMS which include the phasor information gathered from Micro-phasor measurement unit <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu\text{PMU}$</tex> are recently used for monitoring and protection purposes to develop a wide area protection scheme for active distribution network. This paper proposes a modified wide area protection scheme based on the ratio of the sum of voltage phasors across two terminals transmission line to the sum of the current phasors flowing in the line. The relay coordination is addressed in the modified scheme. The modified protection scheme has been tested in the distribution system with different fault types and operation modes. Based on the simulation results, the proposed scheme can effectively detect, identify and isolate the faulty section.
