Abstract

Along with the significant growth of the chocolate industry, there has been a corresponding increase in the cultivation of cocoa, the primary raw material for chocolate production. However, cocoa pod husks are commonly discarded as waste during processing. This study aimed to investigate the potential use of cocoa pod husks as a cosmetic ingredient. Polysaccharides were extracted from the discarded husks and their physicochemical properties were analyzed. The polysaccharide extract exhibited effective hydration capabilities and was non-cytotoxic to normal cells. Subsequently, the extract was formulated into skin hydrating products at concentrations of 0.1 % w/w and 1 % w/w . These formulations were assessed for stability, skin irritation, and skin hydration efficacy in a clinical study. The results indicated that the polysaccharide formulations effectively maintained skin hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss. Additionally, the formulations were stable and safe for use. This study highlights the potential of polysaccharide extract from cocoa pod husks as an innovative ingredient for cosmetic products. • Polysaccharides were extracted from cocoa pod husk waste. • The polysaccharide extract demonstrated effective hydration efficacy. • Formulations with the extract maintained skin hydration and reduced water loss. • Polysaccharide extract formulations were safe for use in cosmetic products.
