Abstract

The automation of a small micro-grid is important to monitor and control it. Monitoring and control are required for analysis and implementation of improvement actions. In this chapter, a practical micro-grid is upgraded and modernized into a smart micro-grid. This micro-grid will be centrally controlled using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) concepts. The SCADA system will comprise a master terminal unit (MTU) located in a control room, remote terminal units (RTUs) located in ten buildings where PV units are installed, and a communication network linking all the RTUs with the MTU. The collected data from ten rooftop solar PV units at the MTU is analyzed and compared, and important findings are mentioned. Analysis of the data shows that energy generation by PV units is different between different units even if they are located in the same campus, that is, the same environment.
