Is water the best solvent for biocatalysis?
Dirk Holtmann, Frank Hollmann
Abstract
• Water by far is the most popular solvent for biocatalytic transformations also because it is widely considered as green solvent • water is not the ideal solvent for many hydrophobic reagents resulting in low reagent concentrations and resulting in large waste water loads • Non-aqueous reaction conditions offer many opportunities to make biocatalysis more practical and environmentally more benign
