Basil Crop Detection Using Computer Vision and Deep Learning Approach

Abstract
This research introduces an innovative approach to precision agriculture by developing a robust framework for basil crop detection using the YOLOv8 deep learning model. Basil, known for its diverse appearances during different growth stages and under varying environmental conditions, poses unique challenges for monitoring. A meticulously curated dataset of basil images was compiled to tackle these challenges, ensuring a comprehensive representation of the plant's variability. The YOLOv8 model, intricately configured and finely tuned, serves as the cornerstone of this methodology, demonstrating exceptional accuracy and efficiency in basil crop detection. Extensive data pre-processing procedures provided the model with clear and relevant information, enhancing its performance. The research highlights the effectiveness of the YOLOv8 model, achieving impressive metrics in training with a total loss of 0.428, comprising a box loss of 0.377 and a classification loss of 0.960. Critical metrics such as precision (0.960), recall (0.987), and F1 score (0.969) exhibit exemplary levels of performance. The mean average precision (mAP) at an IoU threshold of 0.50 (mAP50) reaches a remarkable 0.983, and when evaluated across a broader IoU spectrum (mAP50-95), it achieves a value of 0.895. Validation results reinforce the success of the training phase, with the model showcasing a total validation loss of 0.435, including a box loss of 0.435 and a classification loss of 0.895. This research sheds light on the potential of advanced technology to revolutionize agriculture, facilitating sustainable farming practices that optimize resources and increase crop yields.
