US defense strategy: forging an industrial orientation towards energy security and foreign policy
Amy Myers Jaffe
Abstract
The United States plays a preeminent role in global energy security through its energy exports, innovation policies, and defense of sea lanes for oil and gas trade. As the global energy system moves increasingly towards electrification, the importance of this role will recede and be replaced with new concerns. The United States will need to reorient its defense and economic strategies to take these trends into account in order to position itself to maintain its global influence and sustain American leadership in energy markets and the US alliance system more generally.
