Abstract

Abstract Raman spectroscopy (RS) measurements contribute to characterization of spinel phase ferrite nanoparticles. However, the capabilities of micro‐Raman analysis of such materials are presently not fully exploited. In order to expand the frontier of RS in nanomaterials research, we conducted an in‐depth study of spinel‐structured Mn x Zn 1‐x Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (0.75 < x < 0.9) to prospect the linkage of their Raman features with their respective chemical or physical properties. We correlate for the first time Raman features of Mn x Zn 1‐x Fe 2 O 4 spinel‐structured nanoparticles with their saturation magnetization ( M S ), most notably via the band around 713 cm −1 , the area of which was found to be inversely related to M S . The insights presented here show that assessment of M S via Raman features does not require prior knowledge of neither crystalline phase nor size of particles and thus can be used for rapid assessment of newly synthetized Mn x Zn 1‐x Fe 2 O 4 samples, boosting the efficiency of Raman technique applied to nanostructured materials research.
