Abstract

Abstract The paper discusses the main characteristics of some relevant cable structures and demonstrates that, generally, damage occurring in cables is best assessed using local measurements, including the installed force and mechanical properties. A review of techniques to evaluate force and mechanical properties is then illustrated with examples from previous experience. A specific focus is given to emerging methods for characterising those properties based on wave decomposition and propagation characteristics to enhance their potential in identifying damage.
