Abstract
The early detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial for sustainable development. Improving the binding properties of crystalline materials for special VOC guests is a tough challenge. Herein, by rationally connecting bis-8-hydroxyquinoline groups onto the two sides of the pillar[5]arene, a “synergistic effect” has been introduced into pillar[5]arene-based macrocyclic host (PQ8). The synergistic effect was based on the collaboration of the bis-8-hydroxyquinoline and the pillar[5]arene groups, which endowed the PQ8 with a reversible selective fluorescent response for 2-ethylenediamine (EDA). Moreover, the crystal of PQ8 could act as a reusable material for the detection and adsorption of the EDA vapor.
