Abstract

Abstract This overview deals with freshwater actinobacteria (one of the dominant groups of the heterotrophic bacterioplankton), their biology and ecology, and their role in cycling some of the main biogenic elements and in the transformation of recalcitrant organic compounds in freshwater reservoirs. The most distinctive features of the most abundant groups of planktonic freshwater actinobacteria, methods of isolation, obtaining pure cultures, and further cultivation have been considered. The general and individual ecophysiological, phenotypic, genotypic, and metabolic characteristics are given.
