The roles of gold nanoparticles in the detection of amyloid-β peptide for Alzheimer's disease

Abstract
As the most common form of dementia in humans, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is linked to misfolding and aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can encapsulate molecules of therapeutic value and enhance transport of drugs through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in neurodegenerative diseases. AuNPs also have antioxidant effect, anti-amyloidosis effect, unique optical properties and nano-scaled chirality. They have been widely investigated in the diagnosis of AD owing to their excellent properties. Recent years, AuNPs have been the focus on Aβ peptides aggregation. However, there is still no comprehensive exposition to explain the roles of AuNPs. Additionally, a series of strategies based on the detection of Aβ peptides still need further improvement. Herein, this review aims to explore the roles of AuNPs in the detection of Aβ peptides for AD. Furthermore, the review provides more insights for the applications of AuNPs in the sensors for the detection of Aβ peptides.
