Abstract

Abstract Nitrite (NO 2 − ) is an anionic species that holds paramount significance in cellular signalling pathways and have crucial physiological functions. Nevertheless, an excessive accumulation of nitrite ions can induce detrimental effects, including intrauterine growth restriction, birth abnormalities, and methemoglobinemia. Thus, quantitative detection of nitrite ions for in vivo and invitro studies is very important. This review presents a comprehensive overview of colorimetric techniques employed for the detection of nitrite ions. Various methodologies have been developed, encompassing diazo reaction‐based sensing, nitrosation reaction‐based sensing, redox reaction‐based sensing, non‐covalent interaction‐based sensing, and other approaches. Each method will be systematically discussed and critically evaluated in the context of this review.
