Abstract
An International Workshop on Seismic Design Methodologies for the Next Generation of Codes, co-chaired by the authors, was held in Bled, Slovenia, June 24–27, 1997. The objective of the Workshop was to contribute to the development and implementation of new methodologies for the seismic design of new building and bridge structures and for the evaluation and strengthening of existing structures. In this paper the main conclusions and recommendations made at the Workshop are summarized and briefly commented. In addition, definitions of a few basic concepts of Performance Based Engineering, which was identified as a promising approach, are presented.
