Abstract

Renewable electricity continued to grow in 2021 despite energy demand and installation disruptions and anomalies associated with the ongoing global pandemic. In 2021, the combined contributions of photovoltaics and wind to electricity generation slightly exceeded that of nuclear power plants, advancing the contribution of carbon-free electricity sources globally to 38% of the total. Following its initial presentation in 2021 with data from 1990–2020, this periodic publication will continue to collect and update information from multiple sources and present it systematically as a convenient reference for IEEE JPV readers.
