Experimental and mathematical modelling data of green process of essential oil extraction: Supercritical CO2 extraction

Abstract

The supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SC-CO2) of Algerian Inula Viscosa leaves was studied. This eco-friendly extraction method proved an appreciable yield about (63.5 – 80.4) 10−3Kg/Kg of dry leaves. On his part the impact of pressure and temperature as technological parameters on the supercritical CO2 extraction rate has been studied aimed at understanding the mechanisms involved in this kind of extraction. Therefore, the pressure has significant positive effect on the yield. The application of three mathematical models on the experimental kinetic data was made firstly to choose the adequate model that gives a best description of the experimental data, then to identify the mass transfer phenomena governing the kinetic of the Inula Viscosa leaves supercritical CO2 extraction. The results show that Sovova’s model gives the best fit with an average relative error less than 8%, and that phase equilibrium governs the behavior of mass transfer in the first period as well as the importance of the internal mass transfer during the final stage of this extraction technique.
