Abstract

In this brief, a new wireless power transfer and data telemetry circuit for biomedical implants is proposed that increases the data-rate without compromising power transmission efficiency. The power and data are transferred through an inductive link driven by a class-E amplifier. In addition to the proposed modulation, this transmitter can be used for a variety of amplitude modulations such as ON-OFF keying and carrier-width modulation. Based on the suspended carrier modulation idea, the data rate to carrier frequency (DRCF) ratio is improved in the proposed transmitter. In comparison with the conventional suspended carrier transmitter, our design is more efficient and less complex. The DRCF ratio in the proposed transmitter is 50 percent. A proof-of-concept prototype of the proposed transmitter has been implemented on printed circuit board. At 1 MHz carrier frequency, the transmitter power efficiency is close to 61% for the power delivered to the load of 32.3 mW and the data rate of 0.5 Mbps.
