Make Exams Worth More Than the Grade
Marsha C. Lovett
Abstract
All too often, when students get back a graded exam, they focus on a single feature—the score they earned. Although this focus on the grade is understandable, it can lead students to miss out on several valuable learning opportunities. Of particular—and often unrecognized—importance is the opportunity to discover how their study strategies and learning processes went awry. This is the domain of metacognition: learning about one’s own learning.
