Ductility Consideration for a Sustainable RC Building

Abstract
In terms of sustainable and green society, a building structure needs to be functional, resilient, and environmental friendly at a post-earthquake event. During a seismic event, the performance of the building gets drastically deteriorated. In terms of safety and serviceability, it is required to evaluate actual capacity of the building at various levels of earthquake in terms of ductility and strength. In the present study, a five-storied residential building has been considered and pushover analysis has been performed to evaluate capacity of the building at various intensity of earthquake with return periods of 475 year, 950 year, 2475 year, and 4950 year. Both the ductility and strength of the building have been evaluated with variation of properties of materials. It has been observed that improvement of ductility can be suitably achieved by selecting a specific grade of steel and concrete. However, the same should also be judged in terms of post-earthquake repair consideration in terms of environmental impact.
