Abstract

Constant spike in the types of vehicles, absence of efficient road traffic management, and technical failures in traffic light management devices all cause redoubled traffic congestion, emissions, and noise pollution in smart cities. Conventional traffic control systems do not handle the complex traffic flow at the junctions, whereas existing traffic control systems work on fixed time-based techniques. In this paper, a real-time traffic management system to control the traffic flow by calculating percentage match using Canny Edge detection technique, which is an image processing method, along with a digital image processing tool in MATLAB is proposed. The proposed system which is designed and verified using Proteus software offers improvement in response time and overall efficiency of the existing traffic control system. The traffic control system with advanced features like emergency vehicle situations is also incorporated into the proposed image processing based traffic control system to improve its resilience and reliability.
