Abstract

The grid-forming (GFM) control scheme, featuring a hybridization of power- and voltage-based synchronization loops, recently emerges as a promising approach for GFM inverters. However, there lacks a holistic approach to designing control parameters of this scheme. This paper, thus, proposes a design-oriented analysis method for this type of GFM control. In the method, the dominant oscillation modes are first identified based on the modal analysis. Then, for the dominant modes, the sensitivities of damping ratios to control parameters are revealed, and thereby the interactions of control loops can be characterized, which leads to a holistic design of control parameters with enhanced stability robustness. Lastly, simulations and experimental results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the design-oriented analysis method.
