Abstract
The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to the interconnection of numerous mobile and stationary devices, catering to real-time applications. However, cloud computing paradigms encounter various issues like high latency, expensive migration costs, lack of location awareness and mobility support, as well as limited adaptability in terms of communication types. To tackle these challenges, alternative computing paradigms have emerged. Edge computing has emerged as a paradigm to address these challenges in the era of ubiquitous computing and the IoT. This paper presents a complete review of edge computing, covering its applications, opportunities, and current research trends. The review explores various use cases of edge computing across different domains, highlights the opportunities it offers, and examines the recent advancements in research and development. This review aims to provide researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals with a holistic understanding of edge computing and its potential impact on the future of computing.
