• Policy and regulation-based measures, logistics and transportation efficiency-based measures, and innovative technology-based measures are the medium for road-based freight transportation sustainability. • Europe leads in interventions and policies for sustainable road-based freight transportation. • The cooperative nature of stakeholders and the strengthening of existing laws are key to improving road freight transportation sustainability. • Stakeholder collaboration has received little attention in achieving road-based freight transportation sustainability.
