Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other health complications; thus, the increase in its prevalence poses a significant public health concern. This executive summary of the 2024 Metabolic Syndrome Fact Sheet by the Korean Society of Cardiometabolic Syndrome analyzed the MetS trends observed among adults between 2007 and 2021 using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The overall prevalence of MetS declined initially; however, its prevalence has increased in recent years, increasing from 27.74% before the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic to 29.69% after the pandemic. The prevalence of MetS was higher in individuals with lower educational levels and family income.Similarly, the prevalence of MetS was higher among current smokers, high-risk drinkers, and those not engaging in regular physical activity. These trends emphasize the importance of implementing targeted public health interventions to mitigate the growing burden of MetS in Korea.Continuous monitoring and the development of tailored strategies to address MetS would be beneficial, considering the disparities observed in terms of age, sex, and socioeconomic factors.
