Abstract

This work successfully prepared a hydroxyapatite (HA)-containing self-sealing micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on pure Mg by adding HA particles into a Ca–P based electrolyte solution. Biodegradation behaviour of the obtained coatings was studied. The HA particles transformed the porous MAO coating into a self-sealing coating. The presence of different melting point MAO coating constituents was a key factor. HA particles increased the corrosion resistance of the coating by increasing compactness of the coating which counteracted the decrease in thickness. The MAO coating containing 1 g/L HA particles had the best corrosion resistance.
