Abstract

The growth of the egg sector is linked to major improvements made over the years in areas such as genetic selection, nutrition, preventative health, housing systems and general husbandry practices. A number of key stakeholders have been instrumental in this growth of the egg sector, contributing to the production of 86.7 million metric tonnes of eggs in 2020. The concern about the cholesterol content of eggs seems now forgotten and eggs are widely promoted as one of the best sources of proteins. Consumers are offered more and more opportunities to consume eggs, in various forms, as shell eggs or egg products, and at all times of the day. In the coming years, the promotion of shell eggs and egg products as healthy, convenient and sustainable meal solutions will be the key to the continuing success of the egg sector.
