Abstract
Voltage multiplier (VM) circuits are widely used for high-voltage power supplies to step up the voltage without employing any magnetic component. Depending on the converter topology chosen, the preceding stage of the multiplier could behave as either a voltage or a current source. However, based on the commonly available approximate analysis approach, designing these VMs to precisely meet a given output voltage ripple specification is not feasible due to the empirical approximations used in the solution. This paper presents time-domain-based exact analyses for both voltage-fed and current-fed VMs. Also, systematic design approaches for both types of VMs are proposed to accurately meet the voltage ripple specification. PLECS simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the accuracy of the proposed approach. © 2023 IEEE.
