Abstract

This paper deals with the comparison among some topologies of Hybrid Excited Permanent Magnet (HEPM) machines and interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines for electric vehicle (EV) applications. These motors are suitable for EV application due to their high torque and power density and their enhanced flux weakening capabilities. Torque, efficiency, flux weakening capability, losses are computed in detail by using 2D finite-element analysis. The results of both IPM and HEPM motors have been compared also showing that some rotor configurations are suitable and others are not. Finally the three-phase short-circuit fault analysis shows the higher capability to operate even in presence of a fault against PM demagnetization of the HEPM motors compared to the IPM motors.
