Abstract

Chapter 10 firmly grounds an analysis of cooperation regarding neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including Chagas disease, the leishmaniases, dengue, chikungunya, and zika, in the “norm entrepreneurs” approach. Despitelack of formal regional cooperation mechanisms to address the rising challenges posed by these NTDs, several of which are relatively new to Latin America, over the last three decades complex governance arrangements emerged. They have significantly advanced research and development on several NTDs endemic to much of Latin America. These regional governance arrangements were facilitated by hemispheric and international organizations like PAHO/WHO and global public–private partnerships, such as the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), within which Brazil's Oswald Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), has played an important organizational role.
