Abstract

This study explores the transformation of educational institutions toward fully automated and paperless systems, particularly in the context of Makerere University Business School (MUBS). The rapid advancement of technology, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has compelled institutions to adopt digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability. However, the transition is fraught with challenges, including resistance to change, limited digital literacy, and resource constraints, particularly in developing regions. Utilizing a qualitative research design, this study gathers insights from administrative and ICT staff and faculty members at MUBS through in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The purposive sampling method ensures the inclusion of participants with direct experience in digital transformation initiatives. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes and patterns within the data, while triangulation enhanced the validity of the findings. This research aims to provide a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the shift to fully automated and paperless systems, contributing valuable insights to the broader discourse on digital transformation in education. By addressing the unique context of MUBS, the study highlights the importance of strategic planning, adequate training, and resource allocation in achieving successful digital transformation in educational settings.
