Abstract
Various kinds of transient overvoltages are the main reason for damaging the electrical apparatus. Lightning impulse is one of the primary reasons for transient overvoltages in electrical power systems. The lightning impulses which cause insulation breakdown in the electrical apparatus are standard along with non-standard impulses. Insulation of the electrical equipment are being tested with standard lightning impulse (1.2 × 50) μs, but it has been observed that there are various nonstandard impulse waveforms along with the standard lightning impulse. Hence, generation and identification of non-standard impulse waveforms are essential. In this research paper, an attempt has been made to generate non-standard lightning impulse voltage waveform through software (MATLAB Simulink) along with an experimental set-up. The simulation and hardware set-up results have been compared to ensure accurate generation.
