Abstract

• This review, emphasizes the features of ZrB2 reinforcement exclusively. • Explains about different processing methods of Al-ZrB 2 composites in detail. • The mechanical properties of the composites with more detailed justifications were reviewed. • Highlights preferred fabrication methods in detail, and the optimal amounts of ZrB2 to be added with aluminium for fabrication to achieve significant mechanical properties. • It helps the researchers compare the different fabrication methods of Al-ZrB 2 Composites and explore the impact of ZrB2 on mechanical and wear characteristics. Aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) exhibit excellent properties, including low density, high specific stiffness and strength, thermal stability, electromagnetic shielding, and superior wear resistance. They are commonly reinforced with SiC, Al 2 O 3 , TiB₂, TiC, and B 4 C. However, ZrB 2 -reinforced aluminium composites remain less explored despite their promising characteristics. ZrB 2 possesses exceptional properties, making Al-ZrB 2 composites suitable for aerospace, automotive, and engine applications. This review comprehensively analyzes ZrB 2 reinforcement, covering fabrication methods, preferred processing techniques, and the optimal ZrB 2 content for enhanced composite performance. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the influence of fabrication methods, ZrB 2 percentage, and process parameters on the mechanical and wear properties of AMCs. It also discusses the underlying strengthening mechanisms contributing to improved mechanical and tribological characteristics. This review is a valuable reference for optimizing Al-ZrB 2 composite fabrication and performance.
