Abstract
The current global agenda for sustainable development involves combating climate change, the course towards decarbonization, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The article assesses the existing problems in their impact on the environment and sustainable development. The authors analyzed statistical data characterizing transport infrastructure development as one of the largest sources of emissions. The aim of the research concentrates on the theoretical and practical substantiation of the prospects for the sustainable development of transport infrastructure based on the broader use of rail transport as an alternative to other modes of transportation. Following the goal, the authors tried to define adequate methods. The methods of the research include the methods of comparative analysis, statistical observation, induction, graphic display, and diagramming. Authors consider the transportation environmental potential and characteristics that meet the requirements of reducing the carbon footprint and ensuring the sustainable development of transport infrastructure. The research consists of reviewing existing scientific publications on the topic under consideration. The study results consist in confirming the advantages of railway transport and the prospects for its widespread use. Implementing digital technologies in transport infrastructure for sustainable development could be a topic for future research.
