Eddy Current Brakes: A Review on Working Principles and Technology Evolution

Abstract
This paper deals with a review of eddy current brakes (ECBs) on working principles and technology evolution. Only rotational types of ECBs are investigated in this study. Linear-type ECBs are not considered. A general overview of the electromagnetic brakes is given to describe the working principles and technology evolution of the ECBs over a century has been presented. The major literature studies are given to demonstrate the engineering problems at the time. The aim of the paper is to highlight the ECB enhancements and provide an overview of the ECB designs.
