Abstract
Human civilization has already seen enormous changes in the application of polymers in a very short time since its invention. Polyurethane which contains –NH–C(O)–O– as the main organic function is the most versatile polymer which has led to major changes in human living standards. Polyurethanes find applications in medical, automobile, paint, coating, adhesive, elastomer, adhesives, and aerospace, to name a few. This large portfolio of their usage makes them fascinating to scientists and researchers. This book chapter deals with various synthesis routes for polyurethanes. This chapter also covers the synthesis of bio-derived and non-isocyanate-based polyurethanes. Furthermore, the use of various particulate and fibrous (natural and synthetic) reinforcements in polyurethanes for different industries has also been covered.
