Abstract

This research focuses on the impact of granite powder on the adhesive properties of environmentally friendly cementitious overlays. There is currently a lack of studies concerning both the use of granite powder as a replacement for cement in overlays, and also the effect of curing conditions on their adhesive properties. Due to the conducted research, the authors found new possibilities of applying granite powder, which can be used as a material for replacing cement The addition of this material makes overlays more homogenous. The importance of wet curing conditions for overlays modified with granite powder is also highlighted. For this purpose, the major adhesive properties of overlays i.e. consistency, water absorption, mechanical strength, porosity, and water absorptivity were determined. It was observed that granite powder causes slight changes in the consistency of fresh overlays, and it was also noticed that the addition of granite powder causes a decrease in their water absorption. Moreover, the addition of 10% of granite powder allows the adhesion between overlays and substrate to be improved. The addition of granite powder allows a lower porosity and water absorptivity of overlays to be achieved. These properties cause the improvement (16,5%) of the pull-off adhesion of overlays to substrate. The research also determined the positive influence of wet curing conditions on the properties of composites. The authors’ concluded that the addition of granite powder to overlays may allow for the optimization of the layout of particles in the mix. As a result, more durable, resistant and sustainable cementitious overlays may be produced.
