Abstract

Abstract We theoretically calculate the partial and total ionization cross sections of Methane (CH 4 ), Perfluoroethane (C 2 F 6 ), Perfluorobutane (C 4 F 10 ) and Perfluorobutyronitrile (C 4 F 7 N). We have used the Binary encounter Bethe (BEB) model to calculate the total ionization cross section (TICS). The modified BEB (m-BEB) and mass-spectrum dependence (MSD) methods were used to obtain the partial ionization cross section (PICS) for the cationic fragments. The m-BEB and MSD methods work on the basis of the dissociation energies and mass spectrometry data. For C 2 F 6 , C 4 F 10 and C 4 F 7 N the theoretical PICS estimates are presented here for the first time. The present PICS data for all targets show reasonable agreement with the available literature data. In addition, the TICS of the valence molecular orbitals is calculated for each target.
