Abstract

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles is not a new approach in nanotechnology. Stability, size, catalysis ability, non-toxicity, biocompatibility and speed of synthesis are the facts considering while selecting the method of synthesis for medical applications. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that comes under generally regarded as safe status. The ability of two probiotic bacteria Bacillus clausii and Bacillus subtilis from Enterogermina® is tested for its ability to synthesize silver nanoparticles and its biological applications. Synthesis was confirmed by UV- Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM- EDX and TEM. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed good antibacterial activity against all the gram negative pathogens tested but not to Staphylococcus aureus. Even though S. aureus was not inhibited, its biofilm formation was inhibited by the AgNPs. AgNPs also exhibited a dose dependent antioxidant activity. The antibacterial, antibiofiilm and antioxidant properties of biosilver nanoparticles extended their applications in medical field especially in catheters and dental cares.
