Abstract

The invisible norms of Christian culture - which includes religious, secular, and atheist Christianity - are hard for those raised within that culture to see. This paper asks what it might look like to design human-computer interactions from outside Christian hegemony. It shares concepts from Jewish thought that can serve as exemplars for innovation in design: elu v'elu, tzedakah, the eishet chayil, and ma'alin bakodesh. This work seeks to inspire others to resist Christian hegemony in their research and system design.
