Abstract

The ability to recognize patterns is advantageous in today’s era. Many technologies use pattern recognition, such as fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, and letter recognition. This research employed a qualitative descriptive study that aimed to see pattern recognition’s characteristics in solving the mathematics problem in computational thinking. This study involved three students (one maleand two female) from 45 participating students. Findings suggest that the students have succeeded in solving problems based on the computational thinking components. They solved problems using computational components, namely decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithm, abstraction, and debugging. Pattern recognition characteristics for solving the mathematics problem in computational thinking can be identified as follows: (1) understanding the problem by looking for information on the problem context, (2) matching questions with a similar description of the questions stored in the students’mind (past information), (3) extracting the problem’s components, (4) looking for a relationship from the extraction results, (5) exploring all possible relationships from the extracted results to find a regularity, (6) estimating the patterns from all combinations of extracted results, and (7) selecting the pattern found from the forecast results based on the problem.
