Abstract

Petroleum-based mineral or synthetic oil has been used conventionally over the last few decades. However, the usage of petroleum-based mineral oil derived from the nonrenewable energy source has affected the environment for its non-biodegradability property. As a result, researchers focused their interest on biodegradable and renewable alternatives. Due to several advantages, vegetable oil has been considered as a substitute. Coconut oil, Palm fatty acid ester, and sunflower oil, etc. are considered as an alternative to replace mineral oil as transformer insulating liquid. In this paper, different measurable properties of transformer oil and the prospect of natural as well as synthetic ester oil as an alternative of mineral transformer oil have been discussed.
