Abstract
Nanomaterials as additives are effective for improving the strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of polymer coatings. The dimensionality of nanomaterials (0D, 1D, and 2D) has a significant influence on the anticorrosion performance and mechanism. It is also desired to develop composite additives using two or more nanomaterials (0D/1D, 1D/2D, and 0D/2D) to further enhance the anticorrosion performance of polymer coatings. In this Review, nanomaterials as additives are categorized according to their dimensionality. Their anticorrosion performance and microscopic mechanism are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Then, the synergistic effects of composite additives, which consist of two or more nanomaterials, are discussed in detail. Finally, the current issues and research prospects of nanomaterials as anticorrosion additives for polymeric coatings are discussed.
