Abstract

Abstract A REBCO magnet has been developed for the electromagnetic vibration test of the ground coils for the maglev. The ground coils receive vibration force when a maglev vehicle passes through. That vibration force can be reproduced by exciting the ground coil by combination of AC and DC in the high magnetic field of the superconducting magnet. This electromagnetic vibration test is also important for the development of REBCO magnets aimed at maglev application. This test enables us to evaluate eddy current heating in the REBCO coil. We carried out the evaluation test of eddy current heating with the REBCO magnet. Experimentally obtained heat load values show good agreement with the simulation results. Additionally, the heating spot in the REBCO coil corresponds with the eddy current distribution from the simulation. We also estimated the eddy current heating under actual maglev running conditions. It was 0.25 W coil -1 at 500 km h −1 , which is the rated running velocity of the maglev. This heat load due to the eddy current is only 1% of the total heat load to the magnet. It seems that the eddy current heating hardly affects the cooling system of the magnet.
