Precision Metal Additive Manufacturing
Richard Leach, Simone Carmignato
Abstract
This chapter describes on-machine sensing, monitoring and control methodologies that can be used in metal additive manufacturing, and particularly in powder bed fusion processes. The chapter explores the different categories of defects and their main causes, the most relevant process signatures and on-machine sensing approaches. Special attention is devoted to intelligent data-driven methodologies for on-machine measurement, monitoring and control methods together with open issues that deserve additional research and innovation effort to enable the development of future smart powder bed fusion systems.
