Abstract

This review examines the shift from platinum to more affordable alternatives for the hydrogen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. It highlights ongoing advancements in cathodes mainly based on ruthenium, nonprecious metals, and nonmetals, focusing on innovations in structure, interfacial engineering, and the use of machine learning to optimize HER performance, driving the development of sustainable hydrogen energy solutions.
