Abstract

Population expansion and unsustainable economic growth are the main drivers increasing the quantity of waste worldwide. Integrated waste management is a serious issue in both the developed and developing countries. With technological developments, scientists have been trying to create machines that mimic the human brain, think and take decisions like humans to reduce the human intervention at waste management levels, such as collection, segregation, treatment, etc. This is the scientific field of artificial intelligence. Therefore, this chapter discusses the integration of artificial intelligence into waste management, as well as its role in waste reduction at most levels of the waste management hierarchy, especially recycling. Additionally, the significant role of artificial intelligence in the circular economy of smart waste management is presented..
